Tips on How to Move

Are you one of the millions thinking of moving to another state or another location? Here are some tips, on saving on that expensive move. Yes, moving is expensive especially if we do not plan ahead and are just careless.

  1. Boxes. Boxes are the one of the most expensive item when moving. Do not purchase from Uhaul the boxes. You can look for boxes that are thrown away. Hospitals are a good source for boxes, shoe stores, and restaurants who buy potatoes in boxes.
  2. Purge. Most movers charge by weight, so be very careful what you put in those boxes. Cartoons with jeans and comforters can weigh up to 75 pounds already. Sell or give away to charity what you do not need anymore, you can donate to a local Goodwill store or do a garage sale. Most of the stuff that are heavy to move can be bought at the next place where you will be living.
  3. Do not bubble every item. Bubble wraps are expensive and get costly by the time you are done packing. You can wrap some items with towels or old newspapers. Do not wrap plates, ceramics with newsprint as it might smudge on the item.
  4. Do wrap expensive sculptures in bubble wrap and box or crate it if you can. Art works, expensive collectibles, players and television set also fall into this category.
  5. List all items in a record. Itemize which box contains which items and make sure to label each boxes correctly.
  6. Record expenses to keep track of everything you spend. Keep checking if you are over your allocated budget of moving.
  7. Measure everything so that it is easy for heavy furniture to get into your new house.
  8. Shop around for a good hauler, or better yet, drive your own truck to move. It is cheaper and most lease units have a drop off for the trucks in key cities.
