In an international removal, one of the processes that need to be undertaken is to move heavy items such as cupboards, display cabinets, container chests, and the like. Traditionally, two or more men may be required to carry the items from one place to another. Unfortunately, moving or carrying this way could damage the item. For instance, a heavy item may need to be carried by two or more people. While carrying the item from the kitchen to the front door, the removals staff may inadvertently bump on walls, place the item down every now and then to rest, or hit a few obstructions. These minor mishaps can damage the item as it is carried on its way to the truck.
Fortunately, there are certain kinds of equipment that could be used in carrying heavy pieces during an international removal. Here are just a few of them.
- Moving pads – Typically used on items that are too heavy to lift, these are concave pads that are placed at the bottom of the piece’s feet or corners. One side is usually padded (the side where the piece’s feet rest) while the other is smooth (the side in direct contact with the floor). With the pads in position, you can simply slide the item across the floor to another area.
- Dolly – this is typically a flat apparatus with four multi-directional wheels at the bottom. Lift the item, place it on the dolly then roll it to a new location. Another advantage of using a dolly is that you can place and move multiple smaller items such as boxes, packs and bags at once rather than carrying them singly.
- Straps – these are hand straps or shoulder straps that wrap around the item to secure it. The straps are then worn like a backpack to lift and move the piece. Straps are typically used to move for small, light items.
